OK, so some website companies pride theirselves on designing and coding bespoke ecommerce applications for their clients.  Don't get me wrong and hats off to these very clever people, but this is not the way we work.

We have imbraced Open Source solutions such as Zen Cart, Prestashop & Magenta.  All these products offer a ecommerce framework for us to start building your site, so literally half the work has already been done, allowing concentration of effort on design, function and client requirement.  Also unlike bespoke coded sites, Open Source software is continuously supported by an active community of literally thousands of professionals who continually contribute, update and develop the framework.  The result is a framework that incorporates the latest trends in ecommerce design which is supported by a global community of developers and professionals.  Even if your web designer suddenly disapears, with open Source solutions such as the above, you will easily find a professional who can help you out, unlike bespoke coded sites where you could end up stuck if your web designer goes out of business.

For example, as of February 2011 over 50,000 ecommerce online stores are using Prestashop and as Zen Cart is even older, it is possible that this figure will be substantially higher.  Which framework we use depends on the clients requirements, e.g. are you looking to sale outside the UK, product types etc.
